The interesting part here is that without any troubleshooting at all, Garmin decided to replace my watch. In reviewing the forums, I'm not the only person who received this response, and Garmin's statement on the accrual issue clearly said that watches with GPS problems will need to be replaced. The response was that they had checked my serial number and that no software patch was going to fix my issues, so the watch needs to be replaced. Since I wasn't clear on why that information was included in the response (my problem is the tracking, the distance actually looked right), I asked for clarification.
In contacting customer service regarding a bad GPS track from a trail run last weekend, I was told to RMA the watch, but the forthcoming patch was also mentioned as fixing distance accrual issues.
